As part of our business we necessarily collect data about
our customers.
This statement explains what data we collect and how we use it.
Anonymous Web AreaPart of our site is accessible without registration of any kind. Other areas are accessible using a guest account that is shared by everybody using it and does not allow us to collect any personally identifiable data.As do most sites, we maintain logs of site usage in order to evaluate our visitors' interests, how many pages people look at, what Web browsers are being used, and so on. Our interest in this data is that in aggregate it provides us with a measure of how well we're doing our job. We do not attempt to use it to track any individual's activities and, moreover, it is not uniquely identifying. Customer RegistrationCustomers wishing to do business with us must register and provide the data necessary for our business.Certain parts of our Web site are accessible only to registered customers. Access control is by means of username and password or other means at the option of the customer. Data collected from personalized access to our Web site are used for statistical purposes only and to identify inactive accounts, which we may close after some time. MathDirect provides an optional secure Web server to allow customers to provide information and browse our site using an encrypted channel over the Internet. Please note that our server offers the strongest forms of cryptography available today but that your browser may not support strong cryptography due to legal reasons (such as US export control). DatabaseWe store data about orders, payments, software downloads, licenses issued, and service contracts to allow us to perform our services and to satisfy legal requirements for record keeping.Customers can view the data stored about them and edit their personal data to correct any errors. Passwords are stored in a (one-way) encrypted form and cannot be retrieved by MathDirect. MathDirect will never ask customers for their passwords, except as part of the authentication for Web access. New passwords are given out to customers who can present sufficient evidence of their identity in cases they forgot their password. MathDirect does not ask for or store credit card information from its customers. Billing is handled by our billing agencies and MathDirect receives an authorization code from these agencies which allows MathDirect to identify for which invoice a payment was made, but does not include a credit card number. Customers may request termination of services and removal of all their data from our on-line systems according to our terms of business. We take all reasonable steps to protect the integrity and confidentiality of our data base and the computer systems on which it resides, but computer crime (cracking or hacking) does occur and we may not be able to protect our systems against a sophisticated attack. Announcement Mailing ListsWe maintain a company-wide and per-product announcement mailing lists for announcements that we deem to be of general importance, such as new product announcements, availability of new versions of products or notification of important bugs we discovered in our products. New customers are initially subscribed to the general announcement list only. Our postings to these mailing lists are archived and made available on our Web site. Discussion Mailing ListsWe provide per-product discussion email lists where all subscribed customers may contribute to the discussions. These lists are archived as well; the archive is accessible only to registered customers. Please note that email addresses of contributors to a discussion list do show up in the archive.Other Use of DataMathDirect does not make information about its customers accessible to third parties. We do allow the developers of the products we sell to post messages on our per-product mailing lists. In cases where technical support of a product is provided by the developer of the product, such developers may access our database only as much as is necessary to verify that a customer seeking technical support is entitled to such support.MathDirect and AmazonWe are an Amazon Associate and sell books at our bookstore on topics that we think will interest our users. Amazon will ask you for certain personal information, such as mailing address and credit card number, to fulfill your order. Amazon also has a privacy policy and does not sell or rent information about its customers.Wollerau, Switzerland, November 1, 1998 |
